CHAPTER 6

I woke up the next morning, hungover and confused, cursing the sun for finding the one crack in the window blinds and training directly on my sleepy eyes. The night before came back to me in waves as I used the palms of my hands to rub the sleep from my eyes.

When I reached to my right, I didn’t find Samantha. She was gone from the bed leaving me alone with my thoughts. I recalled her story, the passion, the sex, the feelings of jealousy and desire that were on my mind just before I fell asleep.

The blue flashing LED on my phone teetering precariously on the edge of the nightstand was the only thing that got me moving. I reached for it, letting out a groan of a man twice my age. Upon examination through my cloudy eyes, I saw four new message notifications.

The first message was from Jason, timestamped at 12:21AM that morning. Samantha would have been finishing her tale around that time and I simply hadn’t noticed the text before I passed out.

JASON: Hope everything is fine

It was a simple text, but then again, what could really be said? He reached out to gauge the situation. I decided I wouldn’t be able to calm his fears until I understood myself whether everything was fine or not. I moved on to the next messages, all from Samantha.

SAMANTHA: You falling asleep was not exactly what I pictured!

Her message was delivered to me just before 1AM this morning. She hadn’t joined me in bed immediately, I realized. I imagined she must have been a little ‘wound up’ from the date and needed some time to herself. Seemed like we were all trying to figure out how to feel.

A message came in fifteen minutes after the first. She knew I was dead to the world and wouldn’t respond. She was trying to figure out how to communicate knowing I would read these in the morning. Apparently, it took her fifteen minutes to formulate her next statement.

SAMANTHA: Hopefully we can talk more in the morning when you wake up

I laid the phone down on my chest and tried to formulate at least one concrete connection to everything that happened. Up until now, everything had been a soup of emotions, erotically terrifying and I wasn’t finding the clarity that I needed. I finally raised the phone back to my face.

Samantha’s last text came in at 8:45AM this morning. Seeing the timestamp, I did a double take towards the clock on the nightstand and realized it was almost 10:30. I couldn’t remember the last time I had slept in so late.

SAMANTHA: I had a house to show this morning. Can we go out tonight? Just me and you? I love you with all my heart.

While Samantha was known for being affectionate, there was special tone to the message that resonated with me. She had to work this morning, the odd hours of a real estate agent ready to sell a house at any moment, but her thoughts were on me and my feelings.
